The film Bohemian Rhapsody portrays Paul Prenter as a villain who led Freddie Mercury astray. The Belfast man sold details about the rock star to the Sun newspaper, including his HIV status and outing his sexual activities. He also sold personal photographs. His family has slammed the movie for using him as a villain.
Freddie Mercury
The film reveals that Prenter and Mercury had a sexual relationship which was used to blackmail the rockstar. After selling photos to a tabloid, Paul also claimed that two of Freddie’s previous lovers had died from AIDS. Prenter was fired by Freddie after this.
The movie is based on true events. Paul and Freddie met at a bar in 1975 and he became the rock star’s manager in 1977. The first five years of their partnership were great but things started to go downhill in 1982.
It’s believed that Freddie got fed up with Paul’s hedonistic lifestyle and his lack of respect for the band members. The alleged turning point came when Freddie returned to his home to find it trashed after Paul threw a party without his permission. He later sold photos and stories of Freddie to the Sun tabloid. This was seen as a Judas-like act and he ended up dying from AIDS in Belfast in 1991.
Jim Hutton
